- Course Name: Multimedia Messaging Service (MMS)
- Duration: 1 day
- Technical Level: 4
Overview
Text messaging has seen phenomenal growth over the past few years and mobile network operators are now looking to enhance their messaging systems to take full advantage of the increased data rates that GPRS and 3G networks bring, as well as the increasing capabilities of mobile telephones. The Multimedia Messaging Service (MMS) is the mechanism through which enhanced messaging services and applications are being provided.
This course gives a comprehensive overview of MMS, with specific emphasis on its integration into both modern mobile networks, and into the wider area of messaging technology. Quality of Service requirements, Security, Billing issues, and industry activity, (including subscriber growth forecasts and timescales) are also provided to enable delegates to assess the impact that multimedia messaging will have on future mobile networks.
Course Objectives
- Explain how messaging technologies can be used to enhance the user experience, including the evolution to multimedia applications, and the integration of still and video cameras into modern handsets
- List the media formats capable of being transferred through SMS, and MMS
- Describe the basic operation of SMS, EMS and MMS, noting the main limitations and cross-network compatibility issues, including handset compatibility issues
- List four essential differences between e-mail and MMS, and explain how e-mail can be used to expand the range of MMS applications
- Draw a diagrammatic representation of where the various messaging functions are / will be implemented in modern mobile telecommunication networks
- Pinpoint the interfaces and corresponding protocols specified to allow interconnectivity between networks and MMS Service Providers
- Explain the different requirements of the various standard interfaces used in the MMS application, identifying possible problem areas for compatibility and interconnection
- Distinguish fully the different scenarios for dial-up and GPRS roaming, and the requirements for interconnectivity between networks / service providers
- Name two initiatives / industry bodies trying to drive forward MMS compatibility / interconnectivity
