Speaker Biographies

David Aeron-Thomas, Head of Metrics, Forum for the Future, London, UK

Forum for the Future is a charity that works in partnership with business, the public sector and others to build a sustainable future.

Forum works in the ICT sector with BT, Vodafone, and SUN Microsystems. Forum has 60 leading partners in other sectors including Financial, Transport, Construction and Retail.

David helps organisations get to grips with their short and long term operational challenges. He uses his financial background particularly in the area of reporting and indicators.

David has contributed to Forum’s Sustainable Procurement programme by working with the Sustainable Procurement Task Force on Value for Money issues and with OGC buying solutions on their sustainability strategy for ICT.

David started his career at KPMG where he spent 15 years working with companies to improve their performance through financial measurement and reporting, auditing, corporate finance, corporate investigations and consulting.

FRANCO ALOISIO, Head Corporate Communications & Public Affairs
GO, Malta.

Franco Aloisio heads the Corporate Communications and Public Affairs office of GO (Maltacom p.l.c.), Malta’s leading communications company offering quad-play services (fixed voice, mobile, broadband Internet and digital TV).

The Corporate Communications and Public Affairs role covers public and media relations, sponsorships and community investments, corporate social responsibility, employee and shareholder communication, and corporate branding and image.

For the past 13 years, Mr Aloisio has been involved in marketing, public relations, communication and media in various sectors including telecommunications, financial services, property and insurance. He started his career as a journalist, first as a radio news reporter, then as senior journalist with The Malta Independent on Sunday and The Malta Business Weekly.

This was followed by an appointment at GO Mobile (a subsidiary of GO) as Media Relations Executive, and later on as Assistant Executive Marketing. In 2006, he was appointed Marketing Manager at GlobalCapital, and recently rejoined GO as Group Head of Corporate Communications and Public Affairs. He obtained a BA Hons. Degree in Sociology in 1997. Mr Aloisio is married and has two children.


Professor Ed Candy, Chief Technology Officer, 3 Group, UK.

"Ed Candy joined the Hutchison Group of Companies in 2000. As Global Technology Director, his main responsibilities have been the development of Hutchison 3G's technology, network design for '3', and the associated standards.

Ed has a wealth of experience, which he has built up in previous roles both as Technical Director at Orange, and Group Development Director at Simoco International.

His association with UMTS started in 1987 when he orchestrated the original cross industry UMTS EEC research programme whilst at Philips. During his time at Orange he was tasked by the Mobile industry to establish the UMTS forum, which was established in December 1996, and became its inaugural Chairman.

Ed also acted as Chairman to the UK Government 3G Technical Advisory Group prior to the 3G spectrum auction in April 2000.

He is now the 3 Group Chief Technology Officer overseeing technology across the nine countries where Hutchison operate 3G Networks.

He is a visiting Professor of Strathclyde University, a fellow of IEE and a Senior Member of the IEEE.

Dr John Atherton, Program Director – Materials Stewardship, ICMM

John Atherton is a policy manager in the field of regulatory and environmental affairs for metals with experience in both the public and private sector. He is currently Program Director for the ICMM's Materials Program which includes the development of policy on chemicals management, life-cycle assessment, recycling and materials stewardship.

Before joining ICMM, John was Director for Environment (Europe) at the Nickel Development Institute (NiDi). He was responsible for the development of strategies and programmes to improve the environmental profile of the primary nickel industry and facilitated the nickel industry responses to key European legislative initiatives.

Prior to NiDI, John was the Director of the European office of the International Cadmium Association.

From 1991 to 1995 John worked within the Environment Department of the UK Government as a metals policy advisor, responsible for consultation with industry and non-governmental organisations on the fulfilment of environmental objectives and the management of risks associated with the use of hazardous metals.

John was awarded a PhD by the University of Hull, England, and between 1988 and 1991 was a Post-doctoral Research Associate at Cambridge University, England.


NICOLA ELLEN, Corporate Responsibility Manager, Vodafone UK.

Nicola Ellen joined Vodafone in June 2007 to provide maternity cover for the Corporate Responsibility Manager. She is responsible for the development and management of the UK’s CR programme which involves identifying key CR issues for the business and ensuring they are appropriately managed. These activities are aligned with the company’s strategic goal of being a responsible business.

She has previously overseen the CR strategy at Safeway and Somerfield.

She has participated extensively in external forums. These include chairmanship of the British Retail Consortium’s Environment Policy and Advisory Group.

Nicola’s prior appointments were within the packaging industry, working for Rockware Glass and the Glass Manufacturers Federation.

She holds a degree in Geography, a Master’s degree in Environmental Resources and is a Chartered Environmentalist as well as a member of the Chartered Institute of Marketing.

Nicola’s key driver is a passion to make a real difference in sustainability performance within the companies she works for.

Ruben Peijnenborgh, Managing Director, Fonebak, UK
Ruben joined Fonebak as Managing Director in December 2006. Before joining Fonebak, Ruben was CEO of Shields Environmental, the company from which Fonebak was de-merged in 2004. Born in the Netherlands, Ruben graduated at the Dutch Royal Military Academy in Electronics in 1986, and since then worked for Dutch and American telecommunications and logistical companies covering different positions in marketing, sales and operations. When joining Shields, Ruben initially worked and lived in Canada for several years, after which he and his family moved to the UK.

Lorenzo Radice, Head of Sustainability Reporting, Telecom Italia Group, Italy.
Lorenzo works in the function “Group Sustainability” of Telecom Italia as responsible for Sustainability Reporting since 2005.
From 1997 to 2004 he has worked for Levi Strauss EMA (Belgium) first and for Pirelli (Italy) then,
covering different positions in the EHS/Sustainability areas.
Radice graduated in Environmental Science in 1996 and specialised in “Environmental Law” and in “Health and Safety at Work” studying at the
University of Milan, University of Bangor (UK), University of Bologna and at the Université Libre de Bruxelles.
