As Strategic Business Director, Dirk Hamelinck is worldwide businessresponsible for the industry collaborations of IMEC with top-tier industry partners in the Nomadic Embedded Systems technology domain. In prior functions with PHILIPS, Dirk also builds up a strong industry background in consumer electronics devices and pcperipherals. Dirk graduated in 1985 as Master in Electrical Engineering at the University of Ghent, Belgium.
IMEC is one of the world leading research institutes in nanotechnology, with over 1400 researchers located under one roof, focussing on "cmos-scaling technologies", "more then more technology" and "nomadic embedded systems technologies".
3 years ago IMEC launched the M4 program, which has triggered collaborations with top tier IDM's on research to create technology breakthroughs preparing for the 4G era. In 2006, IMEC has been collaborating strongly with 9 key industry leaders to define the research roadmaps which can support the terminal technologies needed > 2010.
Hereby IMEC has unique position to explain some of the key technology trends that may become reality and support the functionality of 4G mobile terminal usage.
Ted has advised a wide range of foreign telecom and technology firms on their businesses in China. Ted also heads BDA’s research coverage of the handset industry. Based in Beijing for the last nine years, Ted has led consulting engagements advising handset vendors, handset OS providers, chipset vendors, and handset design houses as well as investors in the handset sector. Ted is a frequent speaker at industry events including the World Handset Forum, Ultra Low Cost Handsets, 3GSM India, and other industry events.
Ted holds an honors B.A. in History from Yale University and also studied at Nankai University and Beijing Normal University. Ted is currently enrolled in the University of Chicago’s executive MBA program.
Kunal heads BDA’s operations in India. Prior to joining BDA, Kunal worked in New York with McKinsey & Company including assignments in New Delhi involving McKinsey’s knowledge services. In India, Kunal worked as Consultant (Projects) for the Telecom Regulatory Authority of India (TRAI), where he had been leading TRAI’s effort in identifying and addressing the unique challenges India faces in achieving wide-scale internet usage and broadband penetration through a competitive marketplace. He authored TRAI’s recommendations in this space, as well as leading and contributing to a number of related areas including Spectrum Policy, Unified Licensing, Rural Development, and Leased Line Tariffs. Kunal presents at conferences regularly across India and internationally on emerging trends in the India telecom industry.
Kunal has three degrees from the University of Pennsylvania, graduating with Magna Cum Laude Honors. He has a B.Sc. in Economics from the Wharton School with majors in Finance and Management, a BSE from the Engineering School with a major in Computer Science Engineering, and a MSE in Telecommunications and Networking, also from the Engineering School.

The course commences with a look at the fundamental requirements, before exploring the individual hardware and software components within the handset. Technology choices within standard or advanced modules and features are explored. Procedures and operation of the handset within the Mobile Network are explained in detail, including actions at switch on, cell selection, location updates, establishing calls and sessions, power control, handovers, security, access to messaging services, and support for roaming.
