Khronos Media Acceleration Forum: "Creating an Embedded Media Processing Ecosystem"

Objectives:

Graphics and media acceleration in mobile handsets is one of the largest ever opportunities for both the hardware and software industries. The Khronos Group is creating a royalty-free ecosystem of API standards for advanced dynamic media on handheld, console and embedded devices to turn this opportunity into economic reality. The Khronos Media Acceleration forum will examine the need for an embedded media ecosystem and how Khronos open standards meet that need. The forum will provide insight for developers, content providers, carriers and device OEMs interested in bringing compelling content to handhelds.

Workshop focus:

Khronos strongly encourages operator and manufacturer support in the development and support of OpenKODE, as the success of this vital standard will depend on the participation of the carrier community to ensure it meets the commercial needs of the mobile industry. Advanced user interfaces, compelling media applications and 3D games will drive enhanced revenue for the mobile industry. This in turn raises the value of advanced handsets, enabling higher content revenue and driving network data service usage

Points to be covered will include:

Handsets are becoming the predominant personal computing platform and sophisticated media processing will be central to this revolution. Khronos Members recognize that there is a significant opportunity for the entire rich-media food chain: Silicon, middleware, platforms, application, carriers and have organized to develop the tools and technology require to quickly capitalize on this opportunity.
  • OpenGL ES 3D API
  • OpenVG standard for accelerated high-quality 2D vector graphics
  • OpenSL ES for foundation-level audio processing;
  • OpenMAX for streaming video and image processing
  • the newly announced OpenKODE platform for native games and media applications

Workshop leader:

  • Neil Trevett, Khronos President; and VP of Embedded Content, NVIDIA

Speakers:

Technology experts in media silicon, platforms and software all from 120+ Khronos member companies
